Langtang Valley Trek

Trek over Gosainkunda back to Kathmandu instead of driving. Gosainkund is a beautiful blue high-altitude lake. It is preferable to trek to Gosainkunda on the return from Langtang rather than on the way, as it requires a fairly steep ascent, and by this point you will be better acclimatized, making the height of the lake (4,380 m.) less of a concern. (If trekking this route without a guide, be especially careful with the altitude—numerous people have been caught out by a dangerous error in a commonly available trekking map that incorrectly lists some altitudes. Accommodation & meals The Langtang Valley had been very well set-up with plenty of comfortable lodges. The standard here is good, with warm blankets, fireplaces, comfortable beds, the occasional hot shower (for an extra fee) and a variety of food. Don’t forget to try the momos in this region, as they are larger and more pastry-like than those commonly found in the capital.

  • Day 2: Kathmandu to Syabru Besi (1,460 m. / 4,790 ft.)
  • Thulo Syabru

We recommend an early departure from Kathmandu for your journey to the picturesque Langtang Valley, which typically takes about seven hours. As the road ascends, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Annapurna Himalayas to the west, and the Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the Langtang peaks ahead. En route, we will pass through the bustling town of Trisuli before gradually ascending towards Dunche and the Langtang National Park. After Dunche, we will continue for about an hour downhill until we reach Syabru Besi, where you will be accommodated in a comfortable lodge for the night.

    Duration: 7 hours

  • Day 3: Trek to Lama Hotel (2,470 m. / 8,103 ft.)
  • Today's trek will take you across the Bhote Kosi, also known as the 'Tibet River,' which originates from the nearby Tibetan region. As we move along, the trail gradually ascends through lush sub-tropical forests, where you might catch a glimpse of langur monkeys playing in the trees. We will eventually join the trail from Syabru Besi before ascending further through uninhabited oak and rhododendron forests. While the trail leading up to Rimche might become steep at times, the stunning vistas and serene environment make it well worth the effort. Upon arrival, you will be treated to a comfortable bed in a cozy lodge in this quaint settlement, allowing you to rest and rejuvenate for the journey ahead.

    Duration: 6 hours

  • Day 4: Trek to Mundu (3,550 m. / 11,646 ft.)
  • Langtang National Park

The Langtang Valley trail takes you through a dense forest, giving you occasional views of the awe-inspiring Langtang Lirung mountain. Ghora Tabela, once a Tibetan resettlement project, is now a Nepal Army post with no permanent inhabitants. The trail then climbs gradually, passing temporary settlements used by herders to graze their livestock in the high pastures during summer. Yak sightings are common in this area. The next section of the trail is a somber reminder of the devastating 2015 earthquake, where Langtang village once stood. Now, only a massive rock field remains. A half-hour's walk away from here is Mundu, a settlement with traditional houses, serving as a poignant reminder of the region's past. Though most of the lodges and homes are now modernized, Mundu remains a testament to the villages' former appearance. Take a moment to honor the lives lost in the earthquake and reflect on how your journey supports the survivors.

    Duration: 6 hours

    Admission Included: NOT_APPLICABLE

  • Day 5: Trek to Kyangjin Gompa (3,800 m. / 12,467 ft.)
  • Ascending gradually through picturesque yak pastures, the trail from Mundu offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valley. Crossing several small streams and moraines, hikers will arrive at Kyangjin, where they will find a small monastery and a government-operated cheese factory that offers the perfect opportunity to stock up on lunch and afternoon snacks. After arriving in Kyangjin by lunchtime, adventurers will have the opportunity to take it easy in the afternoon or explore the area. For the more adventurous, a hike up the Valley towards Langshisha Kharka offers unparalleled vistas of the surrounding landscape.

    Duration: 7 hours

    Admission Included: NOT_APPLICABLE

  • Day 6: Rest day in Kyangjin or climb Kyangjin Ri (4,850 m. / 15,912 ft.)
  • You have the option to take a break or discover the surroundings today. You may pay a visit to the monastery and cheese factory, or hike up the moraine to witness the stunning ice faces and cascading glaciers of Langtang Lirung. Another option is to climb directly behind the village to the top of Kyangjin Ri for a breathtaking panorama of the Langtang peaks.

    Admission Included: NOT_APPLICABLE

  • Day 7: Trek to Lama Hotel
  • Langtang National Park

Retrace your steps from Kyangjin to Ghora Tabela, following the Langtang Khola down to Mundu village, and then continue the descent to Lama Hotel. The return journey is likely to be quicker than the ascent. After lunch, embark on the steep descent to Lama Hotel.

    Duration: 6 hours

    Admission Included: NOT_APPLICABLE

  • Day 8: Trek to Syabru Besi
  • Continue retracing your steps from Lama Hotel, through the quiet and forested hills to Syabru Besi. For those feeling adventurous, take the longer but stunning route via Sherpa Gaon from Rimche to Syabru Besi, which offers spectacular views. While it will take longer to reach the ultimate destination, the breathtaking detour is well worth the extra time and effort.

    Duration: 5 hours

    Admission Included: NOT_APPLICABLE

  • Day 9: Drive to Kathmandu
  • Thamel

After completing the trek, it's time to return to Kathmandu. The drive back to the capital takes around 7-8 hours and follows the same scenic route you took on your first trek day. The road climbs high over ridges as it leaves the Langtang Valley, providing impressive views of the Himalayan range, including the Annapurna range and the peaks of the Langtang region. You'll pass through the town of Dunche, the headquarters of the Rasuwa district, where you can stop for a quick break and admire the region's natural beauty. From Dunche, the road descends gradually towards Trisuli Bazaar, a bustling town famous for its agriculture and trade. You can take a break here to stretch your legs and explore the market before continuing your journey. The road then follows the Trisuli River, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and terraced farmland. After passing through numerous small villages, you'll finally arrive back in Kathmandu, marking the end of your Langtang trek.
