5 Days Mount Kenya Trekking Climbing Sirimon-Chogoria Route

5 Days Mount Kenya and Sirimon-Chogoria Route Climb Safari combines the two most scenic routes of Mt Kenya. Ascent is on the dry side of mountain which offers some of the finest walking. Climb up through forest into a wide ridge approach to the summit area. The route starts on the northwest side of the mountain near Nanyuki. Access is adequate and the bunk house facilities are the best on this side of the mountain. The Sirimon Chogoria route is recommended and arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. It is the driest route up the mountain and the walk beside the Gorges Valley truly spectacular. The descent by the Sirimon route takes one through some beautiful forest tracks and completes the traverse of the mountain.

What To Expect

    Day 1: Nairobi - Nanyuki - Sirimon - Judmier Camp (Old Moses Camp)
  • Kenya Wildlife Service

    You will depart from Nairobi and head to Nanyuki for lunch. Afterward, you will proceed to the Sirimon Park Gate. From the gate, you will follow the track as it winds uphill through the forest (which becomes a heathland) after about 3 hours. About 3.5 hours from the gate, you will continue the trekking until Judmier Camp and stay overnight there. Trekking time: 3 - 4 hours Distance: 9 kilometers Elevation: 860 meters

    • Day 2: Judmier Camp - Shipton Camp
  • Mount Kenya National Park

    After breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses Ontulili River. Go right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley, where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. You will have dinner and overnight at Shipton Camp at the elevation of 4200 meters. Trekking time: 6 - 7 hours Distance: 14 kilometers Elevation: 900 meters

    • Day 3: Shipton Camp - Circuit Walk to Austrian Hut
  • Mount Kenya National Park

    Spend the day acclimatizing. Walk to Kami Hut down to Hauseberg Lakes (Hauseberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn). Walk back to Austrian Hut for dinner and stay overnight.

    • Day 4: Austrian Hut - Point Lenana - Mount Meru Bandas (Chogoria Gate)

    Leave at 03:00 to climb up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns. You will arrive in Point Lenana at 06:30 as the trekking will take about 3 hours. After the sunrise, you will descend down to Mintos Hut which will take about 2 hours for breakfast. Afterward, you will continue the journey down to Mount Meru Bandas at the elevation of 2950 meters for dinner and overnight. You will put up a tent in this location. Trekking time: 6 hours Distance: 14 kilometers Decrease: 785 meters
